CONNIE CROTHERS, piano
PAULA HACKETT, poems

By Rotcod Zzaj

For this reviewer, nothing quite tips the scale towards enjoyment as great piano (Connie) together with spoken-word that adds new dimensions to the life of the music. As you listen to “Max Roach”, you’ll hear exactly why I’m diggin’ this one so much. (Unfortunately, that’s the only sample I could find on the web—so, you’ll have to purchase the CD to hear the rest of the tunes.) The pieces are usually only a couple minutes long, ergo, there are 34 gemlets for you to savor. I’ve reviewed a lot of Connie’s work, & can say (without qualification) that this is among the most enjoyable of them all. I give Connie & Paula a MOST HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as well as an “EQ” (energy quotient) rating of a perfect 5.00 – which means that this also gets the “PICK” of this issue for “best spoken-word jazz”.
